Last week when I attended the Lars Andersson presentation I noticed 2 guys who had a similar haircut to mine. I took their pic their so I could show it to my barber, as I thought that their haircut was much cooler than my own. That same night, my friend Shaun calls me and tells me that he’s going to the Rad by Rad Hourani show, and asks me if I wanted to go to the afterparty.
“Uuuuhhh, yaaaaa! Of course I wanna go!” Rad is only one of my favorite designers, like, ever.
So Shaun sends me the deets to rsvp, and later that night I map out how to get from where I’m staying in Brooklyn, to this club called Red Egg in Chinatown. (A week later I found out that it was a restaurant, not a club. Who knew?) Red Egg was located on that border of SoHo & Chinatown where it’s starting to smell a little fishy, but not too fishy. Every business on the street was shut down and all of the signs were written in Chinese. Google Maps got me far enough to see the crowd outside, and the red letters emblazoned above the door.
The gritty surroundings and red sign shining in my eyes made me think, “Is this an S&M club?”
The door girl checked the list for my name and let me in to what was probably one of the darkest spaces I’ve ever been in. (For those of you in ATL, imagine MJQ w about a quarter of the lights.) But good music was blaring and I was surrounded by a bunch of people who obviously looked like they were Rad lovers as well, all dressed in black.
As I walked past the bar, the cheap lush in me worried that I had missed the open bar because of the stupid delayed trains, but when I walked past some heavy curtains into the back room, I saw Shaun sitting on a leather sectional near the dj, and I realized I had nothing to worry about. He had the drink situation on lock down.
It had been a long fashion week and all I wanted to do was dance. I had been waiting for the moment that I could just say ftw! and dance until my legs hurt. So I grabbed my drink and did exactly that. Roughly 30 minutes later, the music was turned down, and 2 guys jumped on the platform in front of the dj booth.
“They look so familiar”, I thought to myself.
For a minute I thought that they would say something about Rad’s show, but before I had time to complete that thought, a song started playing. The boys started convulsing… rhythmically I might add, and then it hit me. These were the same guys from the Lars presentation earlier.
Mid-convulsion they broke out into their own electro-synth version of The Cure’s “Love Song”. You could see the crowds reaction shift from “wtf is happening here” to “omg they’re awesome”. After “Love Song” they began performing original songs. I could only turn back to Shaun long enough to yell, “I REALLY LIKE THEM!”, before I turned back around to do my own version of the convulsion dance.
When their set was done, I caught up with one of the singers and told him how much I enjoyed the set. He told me the name of their band and I immediately tweeted it so that I would remember the next morning to find their music online. Check out their video for “electronicfucksonic” here.
