Where Too Much Is Just Enough

General Idea Fall 2012

February 29th, 2012 by Tomik Dash

Confidence is a must. Cockiness is a plus. Edginess is a rush. Edges I like em rough.”

Yes, I just quoted Britney Spears to describe the quintessential man who would wear this collection. Crew necks sweaters, sweatpants, and flannel patterns don’t sound that exciting when describing garments, but when you throw in bold colors, mixed textures, and unique styling, the refinement of each look takes on a certain… edge.

I remember when I started this blog, General Idea was one of the first men’s lines that caught my eye. It was their Spring 2010 collection and at the time I was kind of obsessed with jumpsuits, which made up nearly 1/2 of their show. As a blogger at that time I sat behind my laptop with dreams of seeing a show at fashion week. Now I have 2 season’s under my belt and have attended close to 40 shows, however despite sending my request to General Idea, I still haven’t gotten an invite!

Next season people. You heard it here first.

Since Spring 2010, General Idea’s collections have morphed so much every season to the extent that it’s hard to find a common undertone. That’s doesn’t mean that each collection hasn’t been special in it’s own way though. For Fall 2012, Bumsuk Choi, the name behind the label, put a new twist on taking menswear to the slopes.

Part of the unique styling that I noticed was the layering of shorts over leggings or thermals. I love this look. I’ve worn this look. I’ve seen this look more and more on the runways, probably thanks to Givenchy who’s men’s collection is known for it.

I saw this look all over NYC and remember tweeting how, “I feel like this city is a big Hype Williams video from the 90s. So many bubble jackets!” Looks like they’re making a comeback.

I loved the pops of color in this collection, but I also liked the restraint. They used orange, but it was a burnt orange. They used green, but it was a forest green. Bumsuk used colors that if too bright, might challenge one’s masculinity, but in these shades, keep guy’s in the safe zone.

The patterns and plaids were my favorite. Each one of these beautifully constructed coats are one’s that I would love to include in my wardrobe.

Overall a strong collection. I wish I could find closeups of the bags though. You can see how awesome they look as the guys walk off the runway, but I want to see the details! What are your favorite looks?
