Where Too Much Is Just Enough

Do the French Vogue Shuffle

January 8th, 2011 by Tomik Dash

It has exactly 3 weeks since Carine Roitfeld, Editor-In-Chief of French Vogue publicly announced that she would be resigning from her position at the magazine, and now the answer we’ve all been waiting for was finally delivered yesterday via press conference… Who will be her successor? As widely speculated, Emmanuelle Alt, the current Fashion Director for the magazine, will be stepping into Carine’s very big shoes (don’t take that literally, i’m sure she has very cute, small feet). What direction will she take the magazine in? French Vogue, under the helm of Carine, has garnered a reputation of being one of the most boundary pushing and avante-garde Vogue’s in the world. Will Emmanuelle keep things within the status quo? Or will she take the Anna Wintour route and use celebrities on the cover to drive sales? Time will tell.

One thing that I can say is a little disconcerting in my opinion, is that as I raked the internet for pictures of Emmanuelle, and I nary found a photo that remotely inspired me in regards to her personal fashion sense. Isn’t that what the European editors are known for? I can look at pictures of Anna dello Russo, Carine Roitfeld, and even our very own stateside Senior Style Director, Kate Lanphear, for hours on end and be constantly enamored. But with Emmanuelle, I got bored. I hope this doesn’t translate into her work. The world is watching!

I can understand your point about her sense of style, but I think part of it is she has more of a masculine edge to her look as opposed to the others sans Kate. I have noticed that her look can be a little monotonous and very “this is my uniform” and yes, that does get boring. My fingers are crossed tight that she can keep it going strong and please….NO CELEBRITY COVERS! *there are few exceptions*

I can see what your saying. I guess everyone doesn’t have to gag us with their style. There are tons of iconic designers who can’t dress worth the damn either. I just think, Europe, and for some reason I automatically expect more. Someone on the VC-DD Facebook page put his vote in for Andre Leon Talley. My how I would love that. Dreckitude!!
