Vintage Clothes – Designer Drugs

Where Too Much Is Just Enough

habachy party

January 24th, 2012 by Tomik Dash

It’s not very often that a party comes along during the winter months that is worth getting excited over. Michael Habachy, an acclaimed interior and furniture designer in Atlanta, celebrated his 40th bday at Aurum Lounge on Thursday night. Me and one of my best friends from high school, Dominique, got dressed up and decided to go and let our hair down for the night.

The theme of the party was 1940′s. I googled what guys dressed like in the 40′s and was like, ewwww, i can’t do that. Then I tried searching for “1940′s counter-culture” hoping something cool would pop up, and still… nothing. So I just said fuck it and went as myself. I donned a vintage red blazer with a shiny black shirt underneath, and my Andrew Buckler drop-crotch jeans to set the look off.

Me & Dominique

A lot of people dressed to the theme which was awesome. The dj was really good, but for some reason people don’t like to dance at Aurum unless the lights are all the way off and it’s about to be time to go. <shrug> Dominique and I didn’t really care. All it took was a Pitbull song to these engines started.

Background painting by Victoria Moore sold at My! My! My!

Yesterday I decided to bust out one of my favorite pieces. A kimono type garment with these amazing prints on it that scream Africa to me. I found it at the same place that I find all of the most fabulous pieces in my closet, My! My! My! Boutique in Midtown. It’s actually pretty long, and sometimes I wear it completely down with a gold dope rope, but today I decided to knot it on the side.

The bracelet I’m wearing is an original creation by local jewelry designer Princess Brandy. Her work has been featured by Anthony Williams on Project Runway, as well as in several episodes of “Single Ladies” on VH1. This piece I’m wearing is minuscule compared to the luxurious crystal accessories that Brandy also creates. You’ll see more about her on VC-DD in the future. All of her designs can also be found exclusively at My! My! My!

I normally don’t do outfit posts, but this is kind of fun. Let me know if it’s something that you’d like to see more of.

MLK

January 16th, 2012 by Tomik Dash

This picture was made possible by Dr. Martin Luther King. Watch the throne.

lol. In all seriousness though, the education I’ve received, the accomplishments I’ve made, the accomplishments that I have yet to achieve, and even our president are all a direct reflection of one man’s commitment to change and unity. His stance on each individual’s work ethic is something I struggle to live up to each time I start a new project.

“Whatever your life’s work is, do it well. A man should do his job so well that the living, the dead, and the unborn could do it no better.”

Working to full potential is something that comes in waves for me, and when that wave is at it’s crest, I ride it hard. But when it comes crashing down, there are times when I feel like I just want to swim to shore and sink into the sand like a beached whale. It’s so hard to find the motivation to catch the next wave. But thus is life right? These are the things that I’m learning everyday as I try to become more of a man.

ugghh… I Can’t w This Normal Ass Hair!

January 15th, 2012 by Tomik Dash

It was fun while it lasted, and starting off the new year with a clean slate was exactly what I wanted to do. But why lie? My hair was EXTRA-regular. I woke up every morning, looked into the mirror, and felt like the reflection staring back at me was a STRANGER. So 2 nights ago, I got the sudden urge to do something about it. And that’s exactly what I did. I jumped off the couch, ravaged my hair color stash, and ran to the mirror to give “my look” a little extra uuumph.

Of course the blonde wasn’t enough. So I went to the barbershop the next morning and treated myself to a Givenchy Fall/Winter 2009 inspired haircut, which Ricardo Tisci, head designer at Givenchy credited to the legendary pornstar François Sagat.

Now, as Oprah would probably say, I feel like I am living my authentic self. And it feels SO much better! Also, the best thing about having this buzzed hair is that I can change it every 2 weeks or so. We’ll see what’s next.

MANIFEST 2012

January 12th, 2012 by Tomik Dash

In addition to having a clean slate on my head, I also made a MANIFEST 2012 list. It’s similar to resolutions, with the exception that resolutions are things that can be broken. MANIFEST 2012 is a list of things that I would like to make come to fruition this year. I feel like writing these things down is more powerful than just thinking or speaking them. I’m a visual person, so seeing what I’d like to accomplish will help me put things in the right order to act on them.

I don’t want to give everything away, but I’ll share a few of the things on my list:

  • Save 20% of ALL income.
  • Read a book for 20 minutes when I wake up atleast 3 days a week.
  • Gain 10-15 lbs of muscle.
  • Write down my dreams (as in actual dreams, like the one’s you have while asleep).
  • Learn how to salsa.
  • Learn how to dj.

Those are just a few of the lighter one’s. I have some heavier one’s that I’d rather share as they start happening. One thing I learned in 2011 is that people talk a big game about being in your corner until that time comes when they actually start seeing you do something. Some goals are meant to be kept quiet until the time is right.

One of my favorite quotes from Kelly Cutrone:

“When people are not supporting what you want to do, they are culprits in a crime against you.”

I feel like I’ve done a pretty good job of surrounding myself with good people. One of those people is Speakerfoxxx. She’s one of the dopest dj’s in ATL. You might remember her from the 1st issue of my magazine, VAGRANT. If you ever want to know what it’s like to live in ATL, just throw her mixtape in rotation when you’re chillin one day. Speakerfoxxx is helping me put a checkmark on my MANIFEST 2012 list by teaching me how to dj.

I hung out with her yesterday, and after 2 hours of playing around I finally got the basics of the basics down for mixing. Please believe that I have a whole new respect for dj’s now bc that shit is NOT EASY. lol. But I had so much fun yesterday, and I’m definitely ready to put in the hours. I wish you could’ve seen the look on my face when I seamlessly mixed 2 songs together for the 1st time. PRICELESS!

The end of last year was a bit of a bummer for me. Here’s to learning from those lessons and doing big things in 2012!

If you had to put 3 things on your own MANIFEST 2012 list, what would they be?

Pinteresting

January 9th, 2012 by Tomik Dash

So Pinterest seems to be this new thing that gays and soccer moms everywhere are raving about. I’ve been playing around on it for a couple of weeks now and I actually really like it. I would describe it as the perfect balance between Tumblr and the bookmarking button on your browser. Basically what you do is create a bunch of vision or inspiration boards, each with a specific topic… food, quotes, fashion, hair, “My Style”, etc. Then, as you’re browsing the internet and see something that catches your eye, you can pin a picture of it to one of your boards. The cool thing is that when you are looking at the pictures on your boards, clicking on one of them will take you back to the original website that you pinned it from. Are u still following me?

Another pinteresting aspect of Pinterest is that if  you have a friend with a board that you like, you can follow individual boards, in the same way that you would follow someone on instagram or twitter, and in your Pinterest stream, you’ll see all of the new things posted to the boards that you follow. Not only that, but you can re-pin things that you like from someone else’s board, on to your board. It sounds way more confusing than it actually is, and once you get started, it’s very easy to get addicted and stay on there for hours.

So here is my problem, I have 5 boards. I have a…

  1. “My Style” Board: This is where I pin pictures of outfits/garments that I see on the web that I would actually wear, or desire.
  2. “Can’t Believe I Quotes Board” Board: I hate it when ppl post quotes all over FB/Twitter, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t keep a few funny one’s around to laugh at myself.
  3. “& I Don’t Even Cook” Board: When I signed up, the last board I thought I’d make was a food board. Until I started seeing all of these super-easy delicious looking recipes. It’s a trap.
  4. “Hautness” Board: For amazing photoshoots from fashion mags or even fun street style.
  5. “Libations” Board: For recipes to fun adult beverages.

My problem is that it has been easy for me to follow people who have great food boards and the quotes are everywhere. But a lot of people’s fashion boards are boring me. Basically, I need more people to follow.

Leave your pinterest url in my comments section so that I can start seeing what inspires all of you. Click the image below to follow me.

Project Runway All Stars – Episode 1 Recap

January 6th, 2012 by Tomik Dash

—-SPOILER ALERT—-

Project Runway All Stars debuted last night and despite not having the host or judges that we are all familiar with, it still felt like the same show that everyone has grown to love. Seeing contestants with familiar faces brought a smile to my face as I watched each of them walk from different parts of NYC towards their first destination.

Enter Mondo Guerra stage left with the shortest shorts I’ve seen since… well since I wore shorts just like them over the summer. Later comes the man who claims that he put the “star” in “all star”. Austin Scarlett whizzes past the Plaza Hotel (of course) looking like a gay version of the vampire dad in Twilight. The rest of the cast mates all follow suit and congregate in a sea of hugs in front of their new host, Angela Lindvall, who I must mention was killing the accessory game last night.

After being greeted and taken into Limelight Marketplace, the contestants are told the list of prizes that the finalist will receive and then introduced to the judges. NOW is the time for the designers to present a look that they brought with them which represents their designing “point of view”. Each designer presents something fresh and unique (which you’ll see later) before they all head back to the hotel and find the ultimate surprise. A good luck video from the orange god of fashion himself, Valentino.

1ST CHALLENGE

For the 1st challenge of the season, “The Unconventional Challenge”, all of the designers were taken to the dollar store and given $100 to purchase items that would help them re-create the “point of view” look that they presented earlier. As we already know, effectively communicating your skill and point-of-view to such an esteemed panel of judges, not to mention making a good first impression is HUGE, because in fashion, one day you’re in, and the next day you’re out. (We miss you Heidi!)

Joanna Coles, the new Tim Gunn, enters the scene in the sewing room and for some reason reminds me a bit of Tabitha Coffey, and a little bit of the lady from The Weakest Link. I was waiting for her to say, “You ARE the weakest link! Goodbye!” That’s about all we saw of Joanna for the whole episode.

Now for presentations! Keep in mind, the challenge was to re-create the 1st look that they presented to the judges, except with Dollar Store supplies. I’ll start with the one in which I felt were the worst. Austin, Elisa, Gordana, and Sweat P.

First looks presented L-R by Austin, Elisa, & Gordana

Final Challenge looks presented L-R by Austin, Elisa, Gordana, & Sweat P

Austin: His 1st look was great. But for his second look, the only thing he got right was the color. You know how there is always that girl in high school who goes to prom in a dress that she made out of duct tape. It looked like his model wanted to do the same thing with teal trash bags.

Elisa: This is the crazy girl who uses spit to mark where she’s going to sew. At one point she told Joanna Coles, ”It’s actually a blessing mark. You do it w your tongue. I’ve been doing this for 17/18 yrs and my clients actually pay me for my blessing.” All I heard was tongue, spit, and pay me, and thought, “So you’re a hooker?” I didn’t like her 1st look at all. You had time to complete something at home and this is what you bring?! It’s like failing a take home test. How is that possible? Although she did what the challenge asked and re-created the look, it was still a juvenile effort. And an ugly one at that.

Gordana: I didn’t really understand Gordana’s 1st look. Whatever material she used gave it this sort of cheap shine. And her re-creation  did not remind me at all of the 1st outfit. Apparently she used tinsel, but when it came down the runway it looked like toilet paper squares were flapping in the wind.

Sweat P: Remember the last post I did on PR? I said I kind of remember Sweat P, but I don’t remember her being good. Well apparently my memory served me well. Her 1st look must have hit the cutting room floor because we didn’t even get a glimpse of it. And her last look resembled a maxi dress made out of towels. I hate maxi dresses. So FAIL!

Now onto the one’s that I felt were the best. Jerell, Mondo, & Rami.

First looks presented L-R by Jerell, Mondo, and Rami

Final Challenge looks presented L-R by Jerell, Mondo, & Rami

Jerell: I didn’t watch the season that he was on, but so far I really like him. His first dress reminded me of something Uli (the German girl from Miami) from Season 3 would have done. Sexy, flowy, and flirty. He recreated it in a different color scheme, but still kept the hi/low hemline that his 1st dress  had, and managed to not make it look like it was done with dollar store supplies.

Mondo: I didn’t watch the season that he was on either but this boy is gifted! His first look was this very Victoria Beckham’esque black and white patterened mini-skirt creation, topped off with fascinator that a bit of a space age flair to it. His second look went off without a hitch, complete with the fascinator, and the most important part was that it was a solid re-creation that looked expensive. He was in my top 2.

Rami: Ramiiiiiiiii!!! I’m a little biased toward Rami bc I’ve had a fantasies of threesome between me, him, and Nigel Barker. But back to the competition. As expected, Rami slayed everybody! His first look was a flapped and folded black & white strapless mini-dress. The craftsmanship of it almost made it look like the model was wearing a beautifully constructed flower. For his final look, he used laundry bags, Christmas tinsel, and umbrella liner to recreate the shapes and silhouettes of his original piece. Which he did effortlessly. The judges were unanimously floored.

In the end my prediction was that Gordana would go home and Rami would win. Well I was halfway right. It turned out the Elisa was just a bit to weird for the judges… again, and was sent packing. Rami and Mondo were the top 2 and Rami took the win. I don’t think anyone would have been mad if Mondo won though as his piece was equally deserving.

Next weeks predictions: Just based on what I saw this week, I don’t know if Gordana can last another episode. I thought the piece that she had time to work on at home was garbage, and if you can’t make a piece in the comfort of your own home, I don’t know how you can pull it together under so much pressure.

Adidas x Jerermy Scott Sping 2012

January 6th, 2012 by Tomik Dash

EVERY. FREAKING. SEASON. I wonder when Jeremy Scott will stop making those shoes with the wings on them! I mean, aren’t you supposed to bring something new to the table with a new collection? He doesn’t seem to have a problem in that department when it comes to his eponymous clothing line. Maybe these shoes that look like ghetto versions of the winged heels of Mercury are selling like hotcakes, I don’t know. But when money talks, designers listen.

And despite my disdain for these winged wonders, I must admit that he did actually produce ONE, I repeat, ONE pair that I do like. Judge me. Because if I were you, I would.

There are a few more in his Spring 2012 collection, without wings, that I like as. For instance, I’m obsessed with the high-top sandals.

& I think these shoes are totally cute.

I would never wear these, but there are a million boys in Atlanta who would.

And theeeeese, these I’m on the fence about. What do you think about them?

Secretly, looking at this collection just makes me wish that Gwen Stefani still did men’s shoes. Her L.A.M.B. collection for men was AWESOME! Yet, she only did it for one season. :( I guess the guys just didn’t get it. Or maybe they didn’t want shoes made by a pop star. I still have 2 pairs that I get compliments on to this day from her collection.

Anyways, take a look at this gallery of the rest of the shoes from the Adidas x Jeremy Scott collab. See anything that catches your eye?

Project Runway All Stars Tonight!!

January 5th, 2012 by Tomik Dash

Tonight is the premiere of Project Runway All Stars and despite the fact that we will being seeing a lot of familiar faces, we’ll be missing some of the series staples as well. This time around there will be no Tim Gunn, no Nina Garcia, no Michael Kors, and NO HEIDI KLUM!! Apparently all of them were preoccupied with filming the 9th season of the regular Project Runway. So this time around the recipe is different. Stepping into the arena for Tim Gunn will be Joanna Coles.

Joanna is the editor-in-chief of Marie Claire and according to her interview with New York Magazine, says her role is…

…slightly different, actually. The All-Star designers are more experienced now — Tim was treating them like undergraduates, I’m treating them as post-graduates. So I’m trying to push them harder, and I want them to create things that people can really wear because this is about, ultimately, being able to have a business that will work commercially.

Tim Gunn will be missed this season but based on the interviews I read with Joanna she seems like she’ll be a breath of fresh air to the show.

Stepping into the arena for Michael Kors, Nina Garcia, and Heidi are none other than newlywed Issac Mizrahi, Georgina Chapman, and supermodel (who I’ve never heard of, but probably should have) Angela Lindvall.

Some of you may recall Isaac’s experience in this arena as he used to host Bravo’s Canal Street version of Project Runway, brilliantly titled The Fashion Show. He always has a lot to say so I think he’ll be perfect. Georgina is an actress/model/designer. Notably she co-founded Marchesa… which basically says enough right there. But just for giggles I will mention that she is married to the executive producer of the show, Harvey Weinstein. Who needs a casting couch when you have a master bedroom?

Now, on to the meat of the show. The contestants! Whenever there is an “all star” show, I guess you never can be COMPLETELY satisfied with who they bring back. Everyone has their favorites. Personally, I don’t know how they couldn’t bring back Nick Verreos or Daniel Vosovic. I lived for them.

I really didn’t watch the show past…. hmmmm… maybe season 5 or so. So some of the people on here I don’t know. But who can forget the talents & personalities of Austin Scarlett  and Anthony Williams. I remember loving EVERYTHING that Rami Kashou put out. That man could drape a tree trunk. And I liked to imagine that he had one hidden in his pants. ;) I also remember Sweat P, but I don’t remember her being good.

Winners of this season walk away completely LOADED. They get:

  • An exclusive exclusive designer’s boutique in select Neiman Marcus stores and on NeimanMarcus.com
  • $100,000 in technology and office space to help grow their business from HP and Intel
  • $100,000 from L’Oreal Paris
  • A feature spread in Marie Claire
  • To serve 1 year as a guest editor for Marie Claire (MAJOR!)
  • A sewing and embroidery studio provided by Brother International

Who are you favorites from this all star cast? Is there anyone you think should’ve been brought back that wasn’t? With the list of prizes being so immense, the competition is bound to be serious!

MAY THE BEST DESIGNER WIN!!
